Photochromic lenzes have the ability to change from light to dark due to special pigments injected in between the lenz layer which densify when exposed to UV radiation.

This makes them perfect for all day outdoor use as they adjust accordingly to different levels of light. The reason these lenses darken in sunlight but not indoors under artificial light, is that room light does not contain the UV found in sunlight.
